 A exposição inclui gravuras, pinturas e desenhos de Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), em duas salas. Esboços feitos por Van Heemskerck durante sua visita a Roma são utilizados para fornecer informações sobre as fontes de inspiração do artista de Haarlem.

The exhibition includes prints, paintings and drawings by Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), in two rooms. Sketches made by Van Heemskerck during his visit to Rome are used to provide insight into the sources of inspiration of the artist from Haarlem.

Central para a exposição é o óleo Auto-retrato com pintura Coliseu, pintado por Van Heemskerck em 1553, que foi emprestado especialmente para esta exposição do Museu Fitzwilliam, em Cambridge

Maarten van Heemskerck começou sua viagem a Roma em 1532. Uma vez lá, ele se inspirou  pelas ruinas da antiguidade clássica e pelo trabalho dos grandes mestres do renascimento italiano.


Maarten van Heemskerck began his trip to Rome in 1532. Once there, he was inspired by the remains of classic antiquity and the work of the great masters of the Italian renaissance.

Encheu cadernos com seus estudos de arquitetura clássica, ruínas e esculturas antigas. Sua viagem seguiu os passos de outros artistas holandeses como Jan Gossaert (c. 1478-1532) e seu professor Jan van Scorel (1.495-1.562).

He filled sketchbooks with his studies of classical architecture, ruins and ancient sculptures. His trip followed in the footsteps of other Dutch artists such as Jan Gossaert (c. 1478-1532) and his teacher Jan van Scorel (1495-1562).
