We can’t leave artist Suzanne Valadon’s (1865–1938) life without mentioning the unconventional relationship she had with her son’s friend, painter Andre Utter (1886-1948). He was her lover, her model, her husband, & her business manager.

In 1906, her son Maurice Utrillo introduced her to his friend Andre Utter. At that time, she was married to stockbroker Paul Mousis, whom she had married in 1896. She fell in love with André Utter, an artist 21 years her junior. He became the love of her life.

Utter consented to model for Valadon’s 1909 painting of Adam and Eve. Eve was a nude self portrait, & Utter was her lover as Adam. He posed as the nude male figure in each of the versions of The Joy of Life during 1910 & 1911.

By the time Valadon painted Family Portrait in 1912, Utter was shown as the figure of authority in the group. And by that time, he was actually managing Utrillo’s, Valadon’s, & his own finances. He also spent time bailing Utrillo out of his alcoholic episodes.

Valadon had begun her artistic career as a model for Renoir, Lautrec, Degas, and others. In Utter, she formed a relationship which overturned many traditional expectations--those of mother of a friend; of the artist-model hierarchy; and of older woman with younger man.

In 1913, Utter, Valadon, & Utrillo traveled to Corsica, where she painted Casting the Net & became the 1st female artist devoting a painting to male nudes. Utter posed for all 3 fishermen.

She married Andre Utter in 1914. Suzanne was nearly 50 when she married Utter. Here was another precedent turned upside-down. The female artist married her male model. The marriage saw periods of estrangement over the years but a relationship remained. By 1918, Utter was managing all 3 of their careers, which he continued to do; until Utrillo married Lucie Valore Pauwels in 1935, and Suzanne Valadon died in 1938.
