Veronese :  Magnificência na Veneza Renascentista é dedicada a um dos artistas mais influentes do século 16. Esta exposição de 50 de suas obras, muitas das quais vieram para Londres de todo o mundo, é a coleção mais importante de obras-primas do artista à ser exibido no Reino Unido até agora .

Paolo Caliari (1528-1588) , conhecido como Veronese , foi um dos mais renomados e requisitados artistas que trabalharam em Veneza, no século 16 . Suas obras decoram igrejas, palácios patrícios, vilas e edifícios públicos em toda a região do Vêneto - e são inseparáveis ​​da nossa idéia da opulência e grandeza da República de Veneza da época.

Empréstimos importantes para a exposição incluem obras de igrejas e galerias de arte de toda a Europa ( Áustria, França , Itália e Espanha ) e nos EUA. A exposição exibe muitas das obras mais célebres de Veronese, incluindo o martírio de São Jorge (cerca de 1565)  empréstado da igreja de San Giorgio in Braida, Verona, e O Casamento Místico de Santa Catarina (1565-1570, Gallerie dell'Accademia, Veneza).

Nenhum destes grandes retábulos foi visto anteriormente no Reino Unido e a exposição vai permitir que os visitantes possan compará-los com as pintura seculares de Veronese mais bem sucedidas do mesmo período, a magnífica família de Dario diante de Alexandre( 1565-7 ), que estava entre os primeiras grandes obras adquiridas pela National Gallery na Europa continental .

Destaques da exposição incluem a exibição de três dos mais belos retratos do artista do período de sua chegada em Veneza : "  Retrato de um Gentleman " (cerca de 1555, Palazzo Pitti, Florença), o " Retrato de uma mulher , conhecida como a 'Bella Nani '' (cerca de 1555-1560 , Musée du Louvre , Paris) e do " Retrato de um Gentleman" (1560-1565 , do Museu J. Paul Getty , em Los Angeles) .

As obras estão reunidos na exposição , pela primeira vez em centenas de anos. Marte e Vênus Unidos pelo Amor (cerca de 1570 -1575 , The Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York), deixa os EUA pela primeira vez desde 1910 para a exposição e se reencontra , pela primeira vez desde o século 18 , com as  Quatro alegorias do Amor (cerca de 1575) da National Gallery.

Dois retábulos companheiro pintados para a igreja de San Benedetto Po perto de Mantua : A Virgem e o Menino com Santos Antônio Abade e Paulo, o Eremita ( 1562, Chrysler Museum of Art, de Norfolk, Virginia) e a Consagração de São Nicolau (1562) da National Gallery, estão expostas juntas sòmente pela segunda vez desde o século 18.

A adoração da Galeria dos Reis (1573 ) , pintada para a igreja de São Silvestre em Veneza, há muito tempo uma das  pinturas mais admiradas do artista e recentemente limpa, será mostrado ao lado de um retábulo do mesmo assunto , pintado no mesmo ano para o igreja de Santa Corona, Vicenza. Estas imagens nunca foram vistos juntos desde que foram no estúdio do artista.

Nascido em Verona em 1528, filho de um pedreiro, Veronese entrou no atelier de Antonio Badile em 1541. Trabalhando em Verona, ele realizou importantes encomendas para as igrejas e famílias aristocráticas, como a Canossa e Bevilacqua.

No início da década de 1550, Veronese se mudou para Veneza, uma cidade da qual ele raramente saía. Foi aqui, apoiado por Ticiano, e trabalhando ao lado de Jacopo Sansovino e Andrea Palladio, que ele foi estabelecido como um dos principais artistas da Europa. Sua reputação póstuma foi tão consistentemente elevada quanto a sua influência foi forte. A obra de Van Dyck, Rubens, Watteau, Tiepolo e Delacroix se inspiram no seu exemplo.

A primeira exposição a concentrar-se na notável coleção do Morgan de desenhos criada nessa época importante da história desta grande cidade portuária, Veneza renascentista: Desenhos do Morgan exibe mestres como Ticiano, Tintoretto, Veronese e Carpaccio, bem como muitos outros artistas menos conhecidos, mas altamente talentosos. The first exhibition to focus on the Morgan's outstanding collection of drawings created during this important era in the history of the great port city, Renaissance Venice: Drawings from the Morgan features work by masters such as Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, and Carpaccio, as well as many other less known but highly gifted artists. The show also includes books and maps that reveal Venice's role at the forefront of luxury book production and innovative printing.

All the works in Renaissance Venice are drawn from the Morgan's holdings, and the show explores specific themes, such as portraiture and the landscape tradition in Venetian drawing, the depiction of religious and civic life, the role of the foreign artist, and innovations in printmaking, book publishing, and cartography.
