Arte Degenerada: O Ataque à arte moderna na Alemanha nazista de 1937.

"Arte Degenerada" foi um termo aplicado pelo regime nacional-socialista na Alemanha obras de arte consideradas, por qualquer motivo, desleal à Alemanha e intolerável. Obras de arte modernas de museus e galerias privadas foram pilhadas por se desviarem dos valores nazistas da obediência e do militarismo. Consideradas fracas, decadentes e impuras,  obras de artistas modernos, incluindo Paul Klee, Marc Chagall e Ernst Kirchner foram saqueadas pelo regime nazista para serem mostradas em uma exposição itinerante intitulada "Arte Degenerada". Mais de 5.000 obras foram roubadas em duas semanas.

"Degenerate art" was a term applied by the National Socialist regime in Germany to artworks deemed, for whatever reason, un-German and intolerable. Modern artworks were pillaged from museums and private galleries for straying from Nazi values of obedience and militarism. Deemed weak, decadent and impure, pieces by modern masters including Paul Klee, Marc Chagall and Ernst Kirchner were looted by the Nazi regime, to be collected and shown in a traveling exhibition also titled "Degenerate Art." Over 5,000 works were stolen in two weeks.

Uma exposição de obras de arte originais "degeneradas" abriu em julho de 1937 e viajou por toda a Alemanha e Áustria. Obras foram danificadas deliberadamente penduradas tortas para minimizar a sua importância  tanto para a evolução artística como para as idéias do modernismo. Durante o funcionamento da exposição, mais de dois milhões de visitantes compareceram. Nestes anos, muitas destes " obras degeneradas" foram presumivelmente perdidas, vendida ou destruídas.

An original exhibition of "degenerate" artworks opened in July 1937 and journeyed throughout Germany and Austria. Works were deliberately hung askew to minimize their importance to both artistic evolution and the ideas of modernism. Over the show's four month run, over two million visitors attended. In the years since, many of these "degenerate" works have been presumed lost, sold or destroyed. 

No entanto, a Neue Galerie compilou uma nova e surpeendente exposição de obras ques obraram, revisitando este momento terrível na história da arte e reapropriando a própria linguagem de Hitler para futuro diálogo e entendimento. A mostra apresenta pinturas, esculturas, desenhos e cartazes considerados indignas, numa sala da exposição apresentadas em em conversação com as obras sancionadas pelo próprio Hitler.

Yet The Neue Galerie has compiled a stunning new exhibition of works that remain, revisiting this horrific moment in art history and reappropriating Hitler's own language for further dialogue and understanding. The show features paintings, sculptures, drawings and posters deemed unworthy, with one room of the show presenting them in conversation with the works sanctioned by Hitler himself.

Um exemplo de uma obra de arte aprovada pelos nazistas foram"Os Quatro Elementos" de Adolf Ziegler, que pertenciam à coleção pessoal de Hitler, representado quatro mulheres bonitas e loiras, cada uma representando uma estação. Não só as formas físicas, mas o tema encarnava os ideais alemães de atratividade e pureza étnica, e o estilo de pintura em si seguia estritamente tais orientações figurativas. Esta representação clássica da forma clássica é muito distante da obra denunciada de Lasar Segall, "Eternos Peregrinos", na qual, figuras máscaradas flutuam através da escuridão. 

One example of a Nazi-approved artwork is Adolf Ziegler's "The Four Elements," which was in Hitler's personal collection, depicting four blonde and beautiful women, each representing a season. Not only do the subjects' physical forms embody the German ideals of attractiveness and ethnic purity, but the painting style itself follows such rigidly figurative guidelines. This classical representation of classical form is worlds away from Lasar Segall's denounced work, Eternal Wanderes , in which geometric, mask-like figures float through darkness.

"Eu queria comparar o que era considerado arte oficial e o que era degenerada", diz Olaf Peters, o historiador de arte que organizou a exposição, disse ao New York Times. "E, examinar o papel que a arte moderna desempenhou na política anti-judaica, vendo como arte oficial parece depois de 80 anos."

"I wanted to compare what was considered official art and what was degenerate," Olaf Peters, the art historian who organized the show, told the New York Times. "And to examine the role modern art played in anti-Jewish policy, seeing how official art looks after 80 years.”

A "Arte Degenerada" contém 50 pinturas e esculturas e 30 obras em papel, bem como outras recordações. A exposição aterriza num momento especialmente relevante , considerando a recente descoberta de centenas de obras de arte roubadas pelos nazistas e escondidas num apartamento em Munique. Além disso, o lançamento de "The Monuments Men", o filme de George Clooney narrando o pelotão da Segunda Guerra Mundial designado à resgatar obras de arte em vias de extinção, é seguro para incentivar conversas em relação a este momento histórico, lamentável e fascinante.

"Degenerate Art" contains 50 paintings and sculptures and 30 paper works, as well as other memorabilia. The exhibition lands at an especially relevant time, considering the recent discovery of hundreds of Nazi-looted artworks stashed in a Munich apartment. Also, the upcoming release of "The Monuments Men," George Clooney's film chronicling the World War II platoon assigned to rescue endangered artworks, is sure to incite conversation regarding this regrettable and fascinating historical moment.
