Escolhidas entre duas grandes coleções particulares, Gauguin a Picasso: Obras Primas da Suíça apresenta mais de 60 obras celebrando os trabalhos de 22 importantes artistas de meados das décadas de séculos 19 e 20.

Amigos da Basiléia, na Suíça, Rudolf Staechelin (1881-1946) e Karl Im Obersteg (1883-1969) eram partidários de arte moderna e patronos do Kunstmuseum de Basileia, onde estas pinturas estão regularmente em exposição.

Em áreas da Suíça durante as primeiras décadas do século 20, o trabalho dos artistas na França ganharam enorme ressonância. A troca de idéias através da circulação de exposições de arte moderna francesas e publicações para as principais cidades europeias, juntamente com a viagem de artistas, marchands, críticos e colecionadores, inspiraram uma geração de patronos suíços de mentalidade independente. Várias amizades cultivadas com artistas e marchands, eles estabeleceram coleções significativas de arte impressionista e pós-impressionista francêsa  nas principais cidades suíças.

Staechelin e Im Obersteg faziam parte desse espírito de colecionadores. Sua admiração compartilhada pelos pintores suíços modernos, como Ferdinand Hodler e Cuno Amiet trouxeram uma paixão pela cor dramática encontrada no trabalho dos impressionistas, pós-impressionista, expressionistas, e da Escola de artistas de Paris.

Através de marchands, Staechelin reuniu uma seleção notável de Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, e Camille Pissarro.  A amizades de Im Obersteg com artistas como Marc Chagall e Alexej von Jawlensky levaram a uma coleção rara em profundidade. Ambos Staechelin e Im Obersteg colecionaram pinturas de Paul Cézanne, Hodler, e Pablo Picasso.

Uma seleção de suas propriedades consideradas "coleções irmãs" - estão exibidas juntos, pela primeira vez nos Estados Unidos, incluindo O jardim de Daubigny (1890) de Vincent van Gogh, a tela Mulher de dupla face de Pablo Picasso no Teatro / O bebedor de absinto (1901), e três retratos monumentais de Marc Chagall desde 1914, judeu em vermelho, judeu em preto e branco e judeu em verde. A exposição também apresenta a Nafea Faaipoipo de Paul Gauguin (Quando você se casará?) (1892), uma pintura de grande importância da primeira estadia Tahitiana do artista.
