Impressionismo ao ar livre. De Corot a Van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh

5 fevereiro - 12 maio 2013
Museo Thyssen‐Bornemisza

1. Ruínas, terraços e telhados:

By the time the First Impressionist Exhibition opened to the public in 1874, open‐air painting had been in existence for almost a century. While not the inventors of this type of painting, it was undoubtedly the Impressionists who took it to its maximum expression. The aim of the first exhibition at the Museo Thyssen‐Bornemisza for 2013 is to analyse the origins and growth of this new approach in art, starting with its earliest manifestation among late 18th ‐century landscape painters and concluding with late, expressionist interpretations dating from the early years of the 20th century.

Impressionism and open‐air Painting. From Corot to Van Gogh is presented in the Museum’s temporary exhibition galleries from 5 February and brings together 116 works. Among the artists represented are pioneers of open‐air oil painting such as Pierre‐Henri Valenciennes and Thomas Jones, in addition to Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny, Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Seurat, Van Gogh and Cézanne among many other key names. This extensive range of artists allows the exhibition to analyse the phenomenon of oil painting executed outdoors in its totality, as an artistic practice that offered new and unexpected possibilities for landscape painting and which revolutionised 19th ‐century painting as a whole.

The custom of painting landscapes outdoors as understood today did not take root among artists until the 19th century. Traditionally, landscapes were produced in the studio in accordance with the classical rules of composition, tonal gradation, perspective etc. They did not represent nature as it was, but rather as it should be; an idealised setting of heroes and legendary figures from history,  mythology or the Bible. This was the case with both private commissions and works painted for official exhibitions.

Nathalie Bondil explained, “The selection on display shows a refined taste and a discerning eye for Impressionism: its forerunners with the Barbizon School, the birth of the movement and the historic vindication of the 1870s and 1880s are particularly well illustrated. Beyond the prestige of the signatures, these canvases are all of high quality in and of themselves.”

The exotic settings of Gérôme contrast with the elegant subjects of Stevens and Boldini. Twenty-one Renoirs selected from the 32 Renoirs currently in the Clark collection vividly illustrate the blazing talent of the master of Impressionism: his celebration of female beauty (Girl with a Fan, A Box at the Theatre, Blonde Bather …), his landscapes (Sunset, Venice, the Doge’s Palace, Bay of Naples, Evening), still lifes (Apples in a Dish, Peonies …), and portraits (Self-portrait, Marie-Thérèse Durand-Ruel Sewing …).

This extraordinary collection, comparable in quality and size to that of Alfred C. Barnes, was the work of Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956), heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune, who, for over half a century, quietly built up one of the finest art collections in the United States.

Married to a French actress, Clark lived for many years in Paris, enthusiastically collecting art. A discriminating art lover and skilled negotiator, as independent in his lifestyle as in his tastes, this thoughtful and reticent man chose the artworks himself, consulting only with his knowledgeable wife, Francine. His collection included European and American paintings, Old Master prints and drawings, sculpture, silver and ceramics.

Oil on canvas, 65.5 x 81.5 cm © State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

From 16 June 2012 to 13 January 2013, the Hermitage Amsterdam will present Impressionism: Sensation & Inspiration: the world-famous Impressionist paintings from the vast collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, in their artistic context. Masterpieces by pioneers like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Camille Pissarro will be accompanied by the work of other influential French painters from the second half of the nineteenth century, such as Eugène Delacroix and Jean-Léon Gérôme.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919), Portrait of the Actress Jeanne Samary [Portrait de Mlle Jeanne Samary], 1878. Oil on canvas, 174 x 101.5 cm © State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

The exhibition will focus on contrasts between artistic movements. For instance, visitors will see and experience the sensational quality of Impressionism, the movement that heralded a new age. All the paintings, drawings, and sculptures will come from the collection of the St. Petersburg Hermitage. Seldom has such a rich survey of this period been on display in the Netherlands.

Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863), Lion Hunt in Morocco [Chasse aux lions au Maroc], 1854. Oil on canvas, 74 x 92 cm © State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

Sensation
Impressionism derives its name from Monet's painting Impression, soleil levant (1872); the name was first used mockingly by a journalist, but was soon adopted as a badge of pride. These artists rendered their fleeting impressions in vibrant colours for the pure pleasure of painting. They had no use for lofty ideas and worked in the open air under ever-changing light. The Impressionists brought a breath of fresh air to the stuffy art world of their day.

Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), Smoker [Le fumeur], c. 1890–92. Oil on canvas, 92.5 x 73.5 cm

Henri Moret (1856–1913), Port-Manech, 1896. Oil on canvas, 60,5 x 73,5 cm © State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

Their subjects are easy to appreciate. Along with city scenes and landscapes, they often depicted the most charming aspects of everyday bourgeois life: Paris cafés and boulevards, seaside excursions, informal portraits, and rowing trips just outside town. The revolutionary ideas of this new generation clashed with the reigning academic tradition. Their colourful ‘impressions’ were seen as shocking and radical, and at first they were frequent targets of ridicule. Yet their radical approach to style, technique, and subject matter proved deeply inspiring to many artists. They ushered in a new perspective on reality, a new concept of beauty, a new era.

Charles-François Daubigny (1817–1878), The pond [L’Étang], 1858. Oil on canvas, 57,5 x 93,5 cm © State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg

Inspiration
Impressionism began as a response to the classicism of the Paris Salon, an annual exhibition of officially selected art. The exponents of this style painted precisely as artists were expected to paint: carefully staged scenes with crisp outlines and an eye for detail.

'In the Restaurant' 1907 by Charles Hoffbauer

Claude Monet painted Corner of the Garden at Montgeron in 1876.

Their subjects were mythological, historical, or religious. The most prominent artists in the neo-classicist tradition were Alexandre Cabanel (Portrait of Countess Elizabeth Vorontsova-Dashkova, 1873) and Jean-Léon Gérôme (Sale of a Slave Girl in Rome [Slave Market in Ancient Rome], 1884). One of the best-known French Romantics is Eugène Delacroix (Lion Hunt in Morocco, 1854). Painters such as Théodore Rousseau (Landscape with a Ploughman, 1860-1865) and Charles-François Daubigny (Pool, 1858) represent the Barbizon School. They can be seen as forerunners of the Impressionists, because they painted their realistic landscapes in the open air.

The exhibition will deliberately place the Impressionists in the company of their predecessors, contemporaries, and successors, including both kindred spirits and competing movements. Favourites like Monet's Woman in the Garden and Renoir's Portrait of the Actress Jeanne Samary will be side by side with the work of Delacroix, Daubigny and Gérôme, as well as magnificent paintings by Paul Cézanne (The Smoker, c. 1890–1892) and Paul Gauguin (Woman with Fruit, 1893), who were inspired by Impressionism to develop wholly original, personal styles. In short, the Hermitage Amsterdam will offer a clear and fascinating overview of the many currents and controversies in the turbulent French art scene between 1850 and 1900.
